The crocheters in my life are always so busy this time of year because springtime is baby shower time. Every weekend, there’s a baby shower. It gets a little crazy. While I give a lot of my own crochet gifts, I’m also commissioned for gifts for other people. I have my niece asking for a crochet baby hat, I have a friend asking for crochet baby booties—it goes on. What am I, made of yarn? Don’t get me wrong—seeing a photo of a baby dressed up in my crochet creations is super rewarding.
However, a lot of people don’t realize the expense of yarn! They show you a baby crochet pattern for a Minion Baby Hat and don’t realize that means buying 5 skeins in different colors. People who don’t work with yarn have no idea how much it can cost, or that certain types and colors can cost more than others. So while they might think that throwing me $10 for a baby hat is fair, usually $25-50 is the fair price based on the yarn and the amount of time spent crocheting.
That’s why it’s important to find baby crochet patterns that don’t use a lot of yarn and can be worked up quickly; it keeps costs down so all the babies in town can wear your yarny creations. Family and friends usually appreciate the budget-friendly aspect too. I have go-to budget baby crochet patterns that I rely on for baby shower season to share with you.
