Candy Cane Christmas Tray

October 29, 2021 by Benetta Strydom

Candy canes are traditionally one of the most famous symbols seen during Christmas time. There is a lot of speculation that their red and white colors might have spiritual meaning, yet the true origin of candy canes is unknown. Mostly they are known for being used to make stunning Christmas decorations, and of course, for adding a bit of joy to those with a sweet tooth.

This season, let a candy cane be your inspiration for a thrift craft. Use white paint and ordinary pens to turn a simple tray into something special. The tray used in the example is big enough to hold two mugs, so it is perfect to help building Christmas memories for newlyweds, or for a couple still dating. The completed tray can also be used merely for decorative purposes, or as a fun activity that a group of friends can do together to get into the festive spirit.

The craft idea can easily be adjusted for bigger trays. It is also a way of making small yet meaningful gifts for friends and colleagues.  Whichever way you choose to use it, make sure that this tray is part of your preparations for the Festive Season.

Materials:
printout of provided pattern sheet ~ click here for the PDF file
natural wooden tray sized 5.6″ x 8.4″
white acrylic paint
Artline 210 Fineliner black pen
Acrilex Acrilpens in the following colors: 507 Vermelho Fogo (red); 513 Verde Musgo (moss green); 501 Azul Turquesa (turquoise blue) and 531 Marrom (brown)
paintbrush
Pilot silver marker extra fine point pen
pencil
ruler
quick-drying gloss spray varnish

Instructions for making the project:
1. Use the white paint to add an uneven wash to the tray and allow to dry thoroughly. Do not paint the outer bottom of the tray.

2. Use the pencil and ruler to divide the sides of the tray into 0.4″ wide stripes. Use the red pen to color every second stripe, leaving the others white. Be careful not to touch the stripes that have already been colored, as the pen’s ink will only become fixed once the varnish has been applied.

3. Use the red pen to add a border all around the edges of the tray. Also color the edges of the tray’s cut-out handles.

4. Use the pencil to lightly trace the pattern of the candy cane onto the inner bottom of the tray.

5. Use the Artline pen to draw over the pencil lines.

6. Use the pens to color the leaves green, and the stripes on the candy cane red. Be careful not to touch the black lines when coloring, as this will cause the black ink to flow.

7. Use the blue pen to add some shaded areas to the leaves, and the brown to add shaded areas to the candy cane.

8. Use the silver pen to add squiggles all around the candy cane, and to draw over the pencil lines between the red and white stripes on the sides of the tray.

9. Spray the tray with the varnish. Allow to dry thoroughly before applying a second coat of varnish.

Tip:
To clean, wipe gently with a damp cloth.
