Fourth of July Craft: Heart of America String Art Decoration

June 30, 2016 by Stefanie Girard

Here’s a Fourth of July craft with a rustic feel!

Has the string art bug bitten you yet? Yes, it is indeed making a comeback. Or were you around the last time is was a crafting craze? There was a piece of string art in my grandparents house that one of my uncles made that featured rainbow thread. I thought it was so cool! If the idea of hammering nails into wood doesn’t sound like your type of thing but you like stitching there are these cool “Stitch Blanks” from Plaid in all different shapes that you can create string art with just by using yarn or thread and a large needle.

I thought I’d stitch this US Map/America shaped one in a starburst pattern creating a heart shape in the middle.

This craft is really great for virtually all levels of crafter. I took I pencil and sketched out the heart shape in the center of the America shape. Then I cut lengths of Patons Brilliant yarn in Radiant Red that were about 2 yards long as that was a manageable length to work with.

I then stitched from the outside edge holes to the heart. As you can see most heart holes have multiple strands going into them as there are more holes around the perimeter than the heart. One of the best thing about this stitching as it is really easy to undo. A few times I took my stitches out as I needed to adjust my starburst effect with the stitches at different angles.

To hang the Heart of America decoration I ran another length of the yarn from the two top edges and tied a bow at the top. Sew easy! Happy Summertime crafting.
