Fresh Summer Watermelon Doily Craft

August 28, 2020 by Stefanie Girard

Vintage doilies make a great surface to give a colorful new look to for summer and the watermelon color scheme is just perfect for the round shape of this classic home accent piece.

Doilies come in such pretty patterns and sizes. They often can get a little “aged” look to them. Sometimes that works for your look and other times not. Plain white ones can be pretty on their own but with a splash of color they really can pop!

Instructions

To paint the doilies with a watermelon pattern, I started with the outside edge and placed it on a piece of glass.

I used Plaid’s Fabric Creations paint as it stays soft after it is painted on. On the far outside edge I used the paint full strength. As I worked my way in I watered it down so it would be a lighter shade of green like a watermelon.

I worked in reverse for the pink area starting from the center and working my way out. As I got close to the edge where the green was, I watered the pink down so it too would be lighter. I left a thin area white between the two colors.

After the pink was dry, I painted the seeds with Plaid’s FolkArt black paint and a tiny thin brush.

One of the benefits of working on the glass was the doily stayed in place which made painting the doily easy.

So, if you have a stash of doilies and maybe one or two could use a new look (or you need to hide a permanent discoloration) grab some fabric paint and have some fun!
