I have a stash of plain clear glass vases that I think are one of my favorite surfaces to embellish with different elements as I change my decor. And one of my favorite elements are die cuts. It’s always fun to try new materials with new dies and today’s material is a recycled lace curtain.
If you don’t have a stash of clear glass vases in your cabinet thrift stores are a great source for very inexpensive ones because flower deliveries often come in them and people will donate them regularly.
Same holds true for lace curtains. Thrift stores are filled with home decor elements that are a perfect resource for what was probably a very expensive piece of fabric at one time but now may be an out of style look.
For these butterflies I used a symmetrical lace print but I’m sure an “all over” print would work too, it just would look different.
To cut the lace butterflies I used the Die’sire set of 3 dies and the power Crafter’s Companion Gemini machine.
I have to say it was kind of hard to stop cutting them out as there seemed to be a never ending way of placing the different size dies on the print of the lace to get different butterflies.
For this vase I ended up using 11 butterflies. I glued them on using a tape runner. I randomly placed the 3 different sized butterflies around the vase.
What I really liked was the ability to see through the vase to the butterflies on the back side as well as the ones on the front.
The vase is pretty without anything in it but this will get flowers for Mother’s Day.
Since lace doesn’t generally come in that many colors I plan on die cutting some more and painting or coloring the lace. I’ll keep you posted on how they turn out.
I bet you will have as much fun as I am die cutting lace and I bet you will have fun embellishing all sorts of things with your lace creations.
If you are looking for a unique gift to give Mom on Mother’s day why not try embellishing the vase you give her flowers in. After the flowers are gone she will still have the pretty vase you made for her.
