Parties and weddings are a wonderful time to celebrate life and love. Unfortunately, decorating for a party or a wedding can become very expensive, and that is when budget-friendly crafts become very convenient. Not only is it an inexpensive way of entertaining, it also allows you to leave a green footprint by turning trash-bound items into useful party decorations.
This craft will show you how to upcycle empty mayonnaise glass bottles into beautiful table decorations. The buildings and the black vinyl will fit with a modern theme party, but the sky is definitely the limit with this craft. Instead of using buildings, you can just follow the idea and personalize the bottles for your party by adding your own designs. You can also use a different color vinyl, add colored fairy lights or use different sized bottles to adapt to the mood of the party.
This craft idea can also work well for seasonal parties, such as Halloween or Christmas. The bottles can be stored and used year after year as part of your holiday décor.
Without further ado, grab your scissors and get started!
Materials:
- empty glass mayonnaise bottle with a capacity of 3 liters (or mason jar)
- A4 sized black self-adhesive gloss vinyl decal sticker film sheet
- strip of paper that would fit around the bottle
- battery operated string of pure white LED fairy lights
- Elmer’s Poster Tack
- black acrylic paint
- paintbrush
- standard scissors
- classic embroidery scissors
- utility knife
- pencil
- ruler
- optional: clear cellophane paper
Instructions:
1. Use the pencil and ruler to draw buildings that fit on the strip of paper. To create a more interesting end result, draw buildings with different sized windows and different heights. Carefully cut out the pattern of each building, using the embroidery scissors to neatly cut the smaller areas of the building.
2. Use small pieces of poster tack to secure the pattern of each building to the vinyl. Carefully cut all around each building. Use the utility knife to make a slit before cutting out the windows with the embroidery scissors. Remove the poster tack and patterns, so that you will now be left with the different buildings made from vinyl.
3. Remove the backing from the vinyl and add the buildings to the bottle.
4. To make it look as if the buildings are built close to the river’s edge, add an uneven layer of black paint all around the bottom of the buildings. Allow to dry thoroughly.
5. Add further detail, such as a silhouette of a cat sitting on top of a building and a sickle moon.
6. Add the cellophane paper and the fairy lights to the bottle and voila!
