Mason Jar Craft: Giant Firefly Jar Decoration

July 21, 2021 by Stefanie Girard

Mason jar crafts are all over the place right now and this 21-inch wood mason jar with a cutout monogram inspired me to make it light up with twinkling tea lights just like a glass mason jar filled with summer fireflies like I used to collect when I was a kid.

First up, I raised the unfinished wood up off the table with a few scrap blocks of wood so that it would be easy to paint the edges.

I painted the jar part of the decoration with Waverly Chalk paint in Pool (light blue) like vintage blue glass mason jars. For the lid, I used Folk Art Multi-Surface in Sterling Silver.

When the light blue area was dry, I went over it with a tiny bit of the silver to give it a bit of an aged look, and I reversed it for the lid brushing it with the light blue.

When all the paint was dry, I tied a piece of raffia around the jar where the lid met the base and tied a bow for a dimensional touch.

Then I flipped it over and taped a piece of velum to the back side.

To make the jar light up with the “fireflies,” I recycled a plastic drawer to double-stick tape the twinkling tea lights to the inside (bottom) of the drawer. A plastic storage bin or wood box would work too.

I taped the plastic drawer to the back side of the jar decoration. I only used a bit of tape here, as I needed to turn on and off the tea lights. This decoration, I bet, would work great with a string of twinkle Christmas lights that can be plugged in or set on a timer.
