Have you checked the calendar lately? Oh dear… Yes, it is true! Christmas IS getting closer and it is time to start planning! It is that wonderful time of the year when we share the joy and happiness of the season, and exchange small gifts with one another to celebrate the true meaning of this festive day. Unfortunately, exchanging gifts can add additional pressure to an already over-stretched budget, especially if you have a big family or circle of friends.
Here is a thrift way to turn an ordinary glass jar such as a mason jar into a marvelous gift for a beloved teacher, colleague or friend. The materials costs are pretty low, as a used jar could be recycled to make the gift. The jar can be filled with any suitable gift, such as soaps, fizz balls or even color matching candies. The foam sticks used in this craft come in different colors, so you can adjust the colors and gifts to suit different recipients.
The craft is easy enough for teenagers to try on their own, giving them the chance to make something special for a grandmother or a friend.
Here’s how to make these jars…
Materials:
glass jar with golden metallic lid, 6.4″ high and a diameter of 3.4″
8 blue foam sticks, each stick 4.4″ long and 0.6″ wide
8 pink foam sticks, each stick 4.4″ long and 0.6″ wide
± thirty silver flower craft rhinestones
14″ of cream lace with a width of 2.2″
10mm wide pink washi tape
3.2″ x 3″ blue felt butterfly
A6 sized piece of white printer paper
standard scissors
quick-drying craft glue (such as Bostik Clear)
suitable gift to put into the jar, such as a pink handmade soap and fizz balls
Instructions:
1. Glue the foam sticks around the jar, alternating between pink and blue sticks. Make sure that the foam sticks are all on the same height. It might be necessary to leave an ever-so-small space between the sticks to allow an even distribution.
2. Glue the lace over the sticks around the jar, and where the two ends meet, cut off any remaining lace.
3. Glue the washi tape in the middle of the lace all around the jar.
4. Glue the butterfly to the jar.
5. Add a rhinestone to the washi tape in the middle of each stick, and add one rhinestone to the butterfly’s body.
6. From the printer paper, measure and cut a circle that would fit on to the metallic lid. Cover the circle with strips of washi tape and cut off any protruding edges.
7. Glue the washi tape covered circle to the lid. Use rhinestones to add a border around the circle.
8. Add the gift to the jar.
