Metallic Monogram Painted Rocks – Because Your Mom Rocks!

May 23, 2020 by Stefanie Girard

This project combines so many of my favorite crafting supplies, topics and techniques.

Rocks—They are just such a great surface and shape. These rocks came from the beach a few weeks ago. They are addicting to search for and pick up. I had to force myself to stop as the stitching on my bag was about to give up!

Painting—I simply can’t stop painting everything in sight.

Stenciling-—As a lover of type and fonts, I believe stencils are the perfect tool to get lettering on every surface.

For this project, I chose a bunch of medium-size smooth rocks I gathered at the beach in a variety of colors.

The paint I used was a combination of FolkArt Brushed Metal in Dark Gray, Silver, Copper, and Pearl Gold and Color Shift in Red Flash, Aqua Flash and Violet Flash.

The first step was to place a strip of painters tape around each rock about halfway down the middle. It is important to smooth the tape down as much as possible so no paint will get under it and the straight line will be lost.

Once the paint was dry, I peeled the tape off the rocks.

The monograms were so easy to paint with the Folk Art Vinyl letter peel and stick stencils. They worked great on the rounded uneven surface of the rocks. They are even reusable.

I placed each letter on the rock, painted it and peeled it off. I then placed it on the plastic of the packaging and wiped it off with a wet paper towel. One or two of the colors didn’t pop as much as I wanted to, so I replaced the stencil over the first letter and repainted it in a more contrasting color.

It worked great!

I bet Mom would love a set of monogram rocks for Mother’s Day or why not leave them around your neighborhood like the Word Rocks project does? #wordrocks I happen to have found a word rock in my yard and boy did it make my day!

Let’s be real: Roses are obviously one of the most beautiful flowers that have ever existed, right? Like, that’s not really a hotly contested issue, is it? Because I love roses. And everywhere I look, I see roses in some shape or form. While I love real flowers and real life vases of red roses, […]
